Sahngnoksoo is a Seattle-based organization of Koreans and Korean-Americans creating social change. We work to build political power for the self-determination and liberation of Koreans of all identities including those who are adopted, immigrants, queer, and multiracial. We do this through collective learning, collaboration, solidarity, and organizing. Sahngnoksoo translates to “evergreen” and is a symbol of strength and commitment in Korean movement history.

Tasveer Film Fest!

Please support the Independent South Asian Film Fest!

-------------------------

ISAFF opens with three incredibly beautiful and enriching queer films, two being Seattle premieres. Throughout the five days, we have several amazing queer South Asian filmmakers flying in from corners of the world. More than 50% of the festival is dedicated to the expression of and dialog on issues directly related to the personal and political lives of the people on this list.

It is a space dedicated to those of us committed to confronting homophobia and empowering lgbtq people in South Asian communities. This is OUR festival and OUR space.

We are writing this letter to you in case there is anyone on this list who is not aware of the revolutionary nature of this event. We do not want you miss this opportunity to see how it feels to be at the center. The festival is using numerous resources from governmental institutions, foundations, community organizations, businesses, academia, and diverse groups of individuals – all working very hard for the people on this list. The work we've been doing this year has been on many levels, from staying up all night to write grants to creating promotional materials to coming face to face with our own homophobia. This is all for the love and respect and compassion for the people on this list. This festival is dedicated to each and every one of you!

Please join us, whether you like independent film or not. ISAFF has never been about film only. Film is a vehicle, a starting point, to get to social change, to get to a place of awareness, to achieve equity.

The festival is just a blink away. There is no time to wait to spread the word! The theater seats 295. Help us to fill every seat for every lgbtq program in the festival. You can forward our last newsletter or use the Tell A Friend for your favorite programs. This is our chance to spread our wings as wide as we can in this city!

In Love and Struggle,

This is the news you won’t read in the major papers or see on the news channels. Please join us in supporting what is happening in Korea -- a groundswell for democracy that cannot be ignored!!

*Sumnom commented that DemocracyKorea is mostly in English. Their explanation for this decision (in Korean) can be found here. Read More...

Two SNS members will be going on KEEP this year!

Sara and Sunny will be joining a group of Koreans from across the country (and Canada) on a solidarity and exposure trip to South Korea. They’ll be going as a part of the Korean Education and Exposure Project (KEEP). KEEP’s mission is to increase awareness of and strengthen the global movement for peace and justice on the Korean peninsula. Through building relationships and communities, KEEP seeks to broaden our understanding of and participation in the liberation struggles and unification of the Korean people.

If you’d like to keep up with what they’ll be doing while they’re gone (August 3-16th) please visit the
KEEP blog! If you’re interested in donating to support them then visit the donation page!
